Outside-in Column-Type Hollow Fiber UF membrane

An Outside-In Column-Type Hollow Fiber UF (Ultrafiltration) A membrane is a filtration module in which raw water flows around the outside of each hollow fiber, filtering inward through the fiber wall, with permeate collected from the fiber lumen (inside). Housed in a vertical column configuration, this design maximizes membrane packing density and effective filtration surface area, making it a popular choice for high-capacity municipal and industrial water treatment applications.

Construction & Design

Fiber Material: Commonly made from PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) or PES (polyethersulfone), chosen for high chemical resistance, strong mechanical properties, and long-term durability.

Fiber Configuration: Thousands of hollow fibers bundled vertically inside a cylindrical column housing, with feed water surrounding the outer fiber surface (shell side) and permeate collected from the fiber lumen (bore side).

Flow Path: Feed water enters the shell side of the column and flows across the outer fiber surface; filtration occurs from outside the fiber inward, with clarified permeate exiting through the fiber lumen and collected at the module's permeate header.

Pore Size: Standard UF range of 0.01–0.1 micron, effectively removing turbidity, bacteria, colloids, and suspended solids.

Housing: Vertical PVC or stainless-steel column shell, supporting high fiber packing density for a compact, high-capacity module footprint.
